Shying Away From Intimacy

Shying away from intimacy has become a norm in our society. We hardly want to be caught in the nervous exchange of giving and receiving.

Everyone seems to be on guard, looking out for strings attached. Based on general upbringing, such things as affection, sharing or love is always conditional and always comes with a cost.

Many of us choose not to participate in the game at all. Love & sharing shouldn’t be that way. Others choose to fully engage by the rules of conditionality. They are ok with the strings.

Deep down, our hearts hope for better. Somewhere inside, we yearn for examples of unconditional love, affection and sharing.

Such examples begin with each individual however. We must recognize in ourselves that we have a certain level of distrust when it comes to giving and receiving — attention, affection or love.

To repair our trust, we must practice being giving and forgiving to ourselves without any particular condition. Then we can practice receiving and sharing with others without strings.

This will require the hardest thing ever, to let down our walls of vulnerability. Opening us to possible rejection and abandonment.

Which are temporary pains anyways. The love and intimacy we seek are beyond this point and is worth the heart’s abundant energy and effort.
